New Beginnings at NTU..

Starting education after 4 months off is pretty daunting on its own, even more so in a complete new city with people you've never met before. I've been at Nottingham Trent for just short of two weeks now so it's still all very new to me. From remembering the names of your lecturers to knowing the way to my nearest supermarket, it's been a big change but I have to admit, I love it. I chose to study FCP (Fashion Communication & Promotion) after reading about the course online and instantly knew it was the course for me.

The first week at NTU was a bit all over the place, whilst still getting to know the people I am living with, I was also meeting new people on my course whilst getting used to being in large lecture theatres rather than tiny classrooms all the time. Meeting all the lecturers on our course made me feel much more at ease as they seem so easy to get along with, I think one of the worst things that can happen is to start a new subject and dislike the person teaching you as it makes you unmotivated to learn, however it's the complete opposite of that here and I am already so excited to get started. The first few days consisted more of introducing us to the course and a few ice breakers to get to know our fellow students, which is another thing I think is important, particularly with a fashion course as they can get a bad reputation for being full of nasty, competitive girls however I've already met some lovely people here so it doesn't seem at all to be how people make out. There was also the opportunity to see Bill Cunningham New York which sadly I missed due to freshers flu getting the better of me, however I managed to watch it online that evening. You can't help but find Bill so adorable and cute without even knowing him personally. His personality shone throughout the film and it makes you appreciate his work even more by seeing just how kind he is & the strong friendships he's formed with people he's photographed throughout the years. It's impossible not to smile when you see him riding his bicycle through the streets of NYC constantly on the hunt for beautiful clothes to photograph.

In the second week, the course got into full swing. 9am lectures are difficult I must admit, especially when you're ill and its a monday morning, however I made it and got plenty of notes on what our course is going to consist of, how marking works etc. We then had a seminar which was one of my favourites so far, we were given a list of possible job rules such as Art Director, Stylist, Buyer etc, we then had to decide which we were most interested in and form a group with all the other students in the same role. I decided to choose Art Director as thats a job role I've always had a huge interest in compered to the others, I bumped into another girl pretty quickly and we formed a group within minutes. On a huge sheet of paper we were asked to discuss the skills & knowledge needed for the job plus describe what the job actually is. It was also a great way to meet new people on the course! The task set for the week was to create a blog and keep it updated weekly with detailed posts on my experience at NTU. For me this is a fun project as I already run my own blog, so it's a task I will enjoy thoroughly.

Tuesday consisted of a lecture in the morning on how to create a high quality mood board that would entice someone whilst featuring all the relevant information needed. We were then set the task to create our own based on a colour pallet of our choice, I have yet to decide on the exact palette I want to do yet but I'm thinking of doing something along the lines of deep plum shades for A/W. That afternoon we were shown the documentary film Mademoiselle C, following former editor of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld throughout the 6 months in which she launched her own magazine CR. The film was very interesting although I felt we didn't get as much of an insight to the actual process of building the magazine as I would've liked. However I do enjoy witnessing what women like her do on a daily basis and it did show this to an extent although the films main focus is to show her move to NYC to launch her own magazine, and whilst it does this it doesn't give the viewer a deep insight into the process of choosing which images made it and also the reasons why she chose each image. When you read a magazine all you are presented with is the image, but as a reader I want to know why this image is special, why this made the cut over 50 similar ones. It definitely felt like one of those documentaries which are constantly praising the person featured, never once was Carine criticised,it was full of people complimenting her etc which is all well. However in a documentary you like to see drama, tense moments which i'm sure there must've been throughout building the magazine, though the audience weren't shown these parts which to me creates some curiosity as to wether Carine really does ever snap or have a bad moment.
