The Beauty Battle

The theory behind what makes someone perfect is questioned constantly, is it their weight? Their natural beauty? Or simply how well they can make themselves appear with the art of makeup and a good fashion sense. For my project focusing on the subject of ‘issues’ I have decided to base my work on the question ‘What is perfect?’. I will explore different areas such as social media pressure, plastic surgery, the mask of makeup & body confidence. The reason behind choosing to look into this is that I feel it is a major issue within modern day society and one which personally I myself and the majority of others can relate to. Todays beauty ideals create appearance anxiety for 86.9% of all teenage girls, people everywhere are constantly facing a battle against their own self confidence. According to a parliamentary report published in 2012, girls as young as five years old now routinely worry about their weight and appearance whilst more than half the entire UK population are grappling with mental and physical problems relating to negative body images. Everywhere you look whether is be in a magazine, a tv show or simply a discussion between friends the topic of body image never fails to come up.

'Plus Size' model Myla Dalbesio is a size 10, and is what the fashion industry would—still, surprisingly—call “plus size.”
